Lafarge Canada and Holcim US are embarking on an innovative collaboration with Blue Planet to advance technology capable of sequestering carbon emissions, while encouraging the circular economy
TORONTO & CHICAGO, June 14, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Holcim North America today announced an investment in Blue Planet Systems Corporation to support the development and commercialization of its mineralization technology. Blue Planet’s innovative technology sequesters carbon emissions to form aggregates to produce carbon-negative concrete. A total of 440 kg of CO2 can be mineralized in one ton of Blue Planet aggregates, thus avoiding its emission into the atmosphere.

Blue Planet’s CCUS technology promotes the circular economy as the process of mineralizing industrial waste, such as recycled concrete, cement kiln dust (CKD) and slag, will produce new aggregate products. This investment is another step towards Holcim’s desire to become the world leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions.
“To stay at the forefront of sustainable actions in our industry, it is necessary to be innovative and develop ongoing partnerships,” says Toufic Tabbara, Regional Manager, North America. “Our investment provides a very important opportunity to influence the development of future technologies in the CCUS space while expanding the network of companies that share the same values and beliefs in carbon neutrality to further efforts. worldwide with other Blue Planet investors. »
Holcim North America, a combination of Lafarge Canada and Holcim US, and Blue Planet will begin a multi-year strategic collaboration to identify opportunities to use mineralization technology to further reduce the carbon footprint in cement, aggregates and concrete, with the possibility of expansion to other Holcim Group operations around the world.
“This represents an important milestone for us in North America. Our ambition is to transform our St. Constant plant in Montreal, Quebec into a site that will ultimately advance the commercialization of mineralization technologies, including Blue Planet technologies,” adds David Redfern, President and CEO of Lafarge Canada. “We look forward to advancing our carbon neutral strategy by leveraging mineralization technology allowing us to use CO2 from our own cement plants to produce carbon neutral or carbon negative sand and gravel products. »
“By focusing on the aggregating components of concrete, our technology can have a significantly greater impact on the carbon incorporated into concrete than a traditional approach focused on reducing the cement component alone. This collaboration with Holcim will help us apply our CO2 mineralization technology to large-scale cement operations. We anticipate that this technology will act directly on CO2 emissions,” comments Brent R. Constantz, Ph.D., CEO of Blue Planet.
