In the fashion sector, additive manufacturing is increasingly used. Shoes, handbags, dresses, technology makes it possible to design all types of accessories. And as summer approaches, Montserrat has teamed up with the studio of King Children design to unveil a new pair of sunglasses. And if we’re talking about them today on 3Dnatives, it’s because they were designed using additive manufacturing. This isn’t the first time a company has turned to technology to make eyewear. Last year, at the same time, Adidas also unveiled a pair of glasses with a 3D printed frame.
Leslie Muller, Head of Design at King Children, reflects on the development of the sunglasses: ” For this collection, we wanted to create sunglasses that effortlessly capture their luxury DNA while leveraging King Children’s technology in new ways. By partnering with forward-thinking brands like MONTSERRAT New York and powering their eyewear offering, we are able to significantly move the eyewear industry toward a zero-waste future. »
The Development of Montserrat Goggles
By opting for additive manufacturing, the two companies behind the project have made sure to limit the environmental impact. Montserrat claims in particular to have produced very little waste during the production processes. More specifically, Montserrat and King Children relied on the selective laser sintering process, also known by its English acronym SLS (Selective Laser Sinteting). Thanks to technology, the teams say they have benefited from total freedom of design and have managed to personalize the glasses. While the two companies do not specify which 3D printers were used to manufacture the products, they do explain that they used polyamide powder. For those who would like to get the glasses, Montserrat has already announced that they will be available in two versions, all with 3 different colors.
Gayle Yelon, co-founder of Montserrat, concludes: “ Our two teams have worked together to merge the architectural notes often found in our jewelry and the wearability of our garments into sunglasses styles that fit seamlessly with the brand and have been developed without create material wastes. »
